There is a myth about bridesmaid dresses. It is said that then the bride and her maids would wear the same outfit while going to the groom’s place. The reason they dressed similarly was to confuse snubbed suitors from kidnapping the bride and to prevent thieves from stealing the dowry. However true that was, one might not be able to ascertain right now but nowadays, the bridesmaid dresses are different from what the bride wears on her wedding day. The bride wears her bride’s gown usually a white gown while the bridesmaid dresses can be of any colour but definitely not same as the bride’s.
The bridesmaids are usually more than one with the Chief bridesmaid as the most important of all of them. She is charged with the most important of tasks for the day and she is also referred to as the Maid of honour. This is the female version of the Best Man and they both play similar but significant roles for the couple on the wedding day. While the Best man would usually wear the same outfit as the groom, today’s Maid of Honour appear in a very beautiful outfit usually different from the bride’s and the other bridesmaids.
Brides usually choose their best friends or a very close family member to take up the role of chief bridesmaid on her wedding day. On the surface, it appears that being a bridesmaid is a very simple task where an equally beautiful lady has to stand or sit by her friend the bride until the wedding processes are completed but it is far from the truth. The wedding day is a very tasking day for the couple and the Bridesmaid and Best man’s responsibilities are to support the couple with whatever they need on the wedding day. The two actually would be “˜mini maids’ attending to the needs of the couple.
Depending on the culture, the task before the bridesmaid and the best man might even begin long before the wedding day and extend beyond the wedding day. This is why most couples prefer very close friends or family members to take up this special responsibility for them. Again, there is need for someone to lean on if things go awry on the day. Someone who is genuinely concerned about you; who you can trust his or her presence and strength on the day. The bridesmaid is more than just a beautiful face clad in a beautiful bridesmaid dress, it’s some work.
On a lighter note, being a bridesmaid means you stand a chance of owing a new lovely dress and a new pair of shoes. Unless the couple is on an incredibly low budget in which case, the best man and the bridesmaid might even be paying for their wears for the day. It is a less ideal scenario and thus essential that couples make adequate preparation and provision of the funds they require to put all basics needed in place for their wedding. It’s once in a lifetime isn’t it? Take your time and make it grand.
